The deadline for when passengers must have a federally required identification card for domestic flights has been again extended by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.
Five months before the most recent Real ID deadline, the U.S. The federally required identification card requirement for passengers flying domestically has once again been postponed by the Department of Homeland Security.
The federal agency announced that the deadline would be extended to May 5, 2025, two years after the previous deadline of May 3, 2023. The agency has already extended the date of enforcement several times.
The 24-month extension, according to a statement from the Department of Homeland Security, will address “the lingering impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the ability to obtain a REAL ID driver’s license or identification card” after that procedure was “significantly hampered” by the pandemic licensing backlogs. Due to the pandemic, many state identification card agencies extended the validity periods for driver’s licenses and identification cards or changed to an appointment-only system, which complicated business operations.
Alejandro N. Mayorkas, the secretary of homeland security, said in a statement on Monday that “this extension will give states the necessary time to ensure that their residents can obtain a license or identification card that is REAL ID-compliant.” DHS will also put new ideas into practice during this time to improve the process’ accessibility and efficiency.
Beginning on May 7, 2025, all passengers who are 18 years of age or older will be required to present a driver’s license, identification card, or other forms of identification that complies with Real ID requirements, as determined by the Transportation Security Administration.
A star on the top of the card indicates that the license is Real ID-compliant.
