A psychiatrist was sentenced to 18 months in prison for tax evasion

The professional failed to pay taxes and filed, or caused to be filed, false and fraudulent tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service, which included false statements.

A psychiatrist from Oregon, a suburb of Toledo, Ohio, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for tax evasion, according to the Justice Department, U.S. Attorney’s office, and IRS Criminal Investigation office.

According to court documents, Sandra Vonderembse failed to pay taxes starting in 2005 and filed and caused to file false and fraudulent tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service that included false statements about her income and the amount of tax due and owing.

In addition, Vonderembse misrepresented from 2009 to 2011 that she had no taxable income and that he owed no taxes, despite being a psychiatrist and making over $240,000 annually. In order to avoid paying taxes, Vonderembse sent fictitious financial instruments to the IRS in the form of fake financial instruments and nominee entities. She tried to avoid paying over $360,000 in income taxes in total between 2005 and 2011.

In addition to the prison sentence, Vonderembse was also required to pay the IRS $565,128 in restitution and serve a year of supervised release.

Principal Assistant Assistant Attorney General Ciraolo, as well as U.S. Attorney Rendon, commended the IRS-Criminal Investigation special agents who carried out the investigation as well as Assistant U.S. Attorney Noah Hood, Trial Attorneys Jack Morgan and Jeffrey McLellan, and the Tax Division’s Tax Division Trial Attorneys who are handling the case’s prosecution.

The Tax Division’s website contains additional information about the Division and its enforcement efforts.
