Most of the $80 billion increase in IRS funding is being repealed by Congress.

On Monday, the first full day of the newly sworn-in 118th House of Representatives, the body voted mostly along party lines to repeal the majority of the Internal Revenue Service funding increase included in the budget enacted into law at the end of 2022.

The bill had been a top priority for most Republican Congressional candidates in 2022, but it would need to pass the Democrat-controlled U.S. Senate before being signed by President Biden. Neither of those outcomes is likely.

With some voting present or absent from each party, the House bill to repeal the funding increase was approved by a vote of 221-210. It would repeal the portion of last year’s budget that increased IRS spending by $80 billion.

By enhancing technology and computing systems, customer support, operations, and enforcement, those who supported the initial funding bill claim the increase will help the agency increase collections on already-existing tax laws and, as a result, increase federal revenue. Conservatives argued that giving the main agency responsible for enforcing tax laws more authority and power would endanger small business owners.

The Senate voted 68-29 in favor of passing the initial annual government funding package, which included the increase in IRS funding, in December 2022. A few weeks prior, it was approved by the House of Representatives by a vote of 225-201.
